I gave my first ever commencement speech to the graduating class of 2012 at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.
I think I told them everything important that I knew about going out into the world and being an artist, so I may never need to give another one.
If you have ever found yourself inclined to create anything, I would recommend watching this. There’s also a transcript that I’m sure I will find myself printing out and referring to upon my own graduation.

Well, I know that I’d watch it…
Please, PLEASE someone make this movie. You can have all my monies.
You don’t lose sight of your goal.
Think of it as a mountain. Just make sure you’re walking towards the mountain, all the time.
…You’ll take other jobs, do other things. Just make sure that what you do is walking towards the mountain, not away from it. (So something in television, or writery, or producery, even answering the telephones in a TV production company, is walking towards the mountain. Getting a job milking cows or showing people around houses probably isn’t.)
Big mountain. Small you. Just keep walking towards the mountain.
What did I do to combat the fear of failure? I honestly don’t remember a fear of failure. I had a fear of starving, and, shortly after that, a fear of not feeding my kids, which tended to keep me working and writing. I wanted what I’ve got now. But I would have been satisfied with anything that kept me fed — as long as it was moving towards the mountain. (The hardest job to turn down was when I was offered the job of features editor on Penthouse. It was the first and last time I was ever actually offered a real job, with a salary and an office, and I was a hungry young freelance journalist. But I said no, because it felt like I would have been walking away from the mountain. And looking back on it, I would have been.)

This question came in:
juandepareja asked you:Do ever go through phases where you’re too tired/listless/depressed to write anymore? If so, what do you do to get through it?So I thought I would put up a motivational poster, for you, Juan, and for anyone else who needs it. SMALL VALENTINE’S DAY POEM
Roses are red,
Violets are purple,
Which is a very hard word to rhyme
And makes me happy that on February the 14th we don’t traditionally have to give each other oranges.

This one is just for Tumblr. You can tell because I am in my pyjamas. (I just had to teach my computer the spelling Pyjamas, after it corrected it to pajamas)
